The state of solar glass

Solar glass is part of the building-integrated photovoltaics category and is designed to replace conventional building materials in parts such as roofs, skylights, facades, and window to efficiently generate power.

What is the difference between solar glass and traditional solar photovoltaics is that the newer panels are built into the structure rather than being added on top, which provides an incentive for users concerned about balancing aesthetics and functionality.

China has been leading the way for the solar glass capacity growing to achieve net-zero emission targets.

The first type of solar glass is thin-film modules that have been around for a while and come orange in color made of silicone.

The second type of PV glass is alternated with standard windows which is used in balconies.

The third type of solar glass technology made of organic polymer PV is being developed by companies which promises to operate in 10% sunlight.

The rise of solar glass

Over the past ten years, the number of PV patent filings have risen by roughly 200% across Europe. Many more applications are being filed each month.

Chinese market brands such as Xinyi Solor, Flat Groupe etc seem to be the companies leading the race to take solar glass into mass production and commercialisation. The explosion in Chinese patents and activity could be explained by the Chinese government's initiative known as Made in China 2025. They have identified 10 technology areas that it wishes to promote activity and growth in for domestic companies which features PV and solar glass in particular.

It has been significantly increased patent activity from Chinese companies. It is going to be a combination of innovations that come through from different companies, not only just one company.

What's holding solar glass back?

After the covid-19 impact, China's downstream enterprises have become overwhelmed, expecially by the spiralling glass price solar industry. In addition, delays and supply issues, it seems like solor glass is not there yet in a technical sense as manufacturers cannot yet ensure efficiency of the technology, which would then attract further investment and drive its price down to a commercially attractive point.

There are three keys of the technical challenge which are making it highly transparent, highly efficient, and highly resistant to degradation. Solar glass technical challenges still need to be solved such as panels. After that, where it can be manufactured and where someone can say, there's a business case to do this, that will pay for itself or improve the environment.

Eased regulations and the future of solar glass

With solar installations increasing around the world and the rising popularity of the green buildings concept, the market demand for solar glass is unlikely to fade away soon, especially if backed by government initiatives and incentives.

The new regulatory framework will now enable the Chinese Government to remove obstacles for new investment in the solar glass sector and help reduce PV glass bottlenecks.

In my opinion, there are so many restricions which is a bit blocking the technology's movement to develop the industry. However, diverse companies in the world have been putting a lot more efforts than before, they will find out the best way to grow it. I would like to say that solar industry is more developed than other renewable energies. It can be useful at home, company, even on the street as well. It is used for the small electric to light up if it can save the energy when the sun downs. I have created an idea with solar panel and wind energy before. It would be better if governments and companies try to gather the ideas from their customers or experts. It will boost up the whole renewable energy technologies when it comes all together simultaneously.
