FIThydro: a Europe-wide project

FIThydro project was studied for the negative effects of existing hydroelectric power plants on fish populations and aquatic hatitats to deliever new assessment and decision-making support tools.

One issue : receiving scrutiny is the impact of hydropower on the environment

- FIThydro was made to provide practical solutions and information for energy operators as guidlines in order to improve hydropower technologies in a fish-friendly way.

working to develop cost-efficient environmental solutins, avoiding individual fish damage and enhancing population development.

It is expected by the way towards reducing the negative ecological effects.

Impact of the FIThydro project are with 26 research participants.

The project manager said that its consortium consists of research partners, industry partners, consultants, small and medium enterprises and hydropower operators, energy companies. It makes a result together with very different people and organization from very different backgrounds.

The main goal of this project is to improve hydropower technologies in Europe while looking not only past mortality.

also more than the turbine mortality. It's becase it shows on the wider sets upstream or downstream migration and habitat.

The results said a risk-based decision support system which is for planning, commissioning, and operating hydropower plants.

It means that operators can fulfil the requirments of cost-effective production and the environmental obligations under the legislation, also achieve a self-sustained fish population.

The need is to research and improve hydropower's fish friendliness.

Large scale hydroelectric technologies could have a big impact on wildlife as they destroy and replace the water built up.

Therefore, obtaining permission is able to be a long process which is taking up to a year and begin with a pre-application before the full formal application.

There are many considerations which are as if one needs to take into account the effect of the plant on water life, as well as the impact that noise and construction will have on local wildlife. It is much larger than its required.

Another remarkable one is that this system will have on the local fish population.

Fish passing through turbines is too dangerous, as part of the assessment.

It is often used to allow migrating fish to bypass the obstruction caused by taking the form of a screening.

It seems like the recent climate ambitions of European countries more pressing to investigate the ecological sustainability of hydrompower technologies as rapid as they could create the need for further its improvements.

It brings Hydropower problems and solutions

Hydropower production is not a highly-contested topic for local residents in the studied regions.

However, conflicting views still exist on several issues, including the ecological effects of hydropower, plant ownership, and changes in electricity prices.

While this is not as significant, it would drive public debate on hydropower and influence public acceptance.

The research encourages hydropwer operators, planners, and politicians to be aware of these issues and consider them before taking executive decisions.

Due to Covid19 related disruption, FIThydro was granted six extra months to wrap up its work in the first half of 2021.

It's near-end product consists of an extensive database that includes solutions, tools, and devices, all dependent on particular issues. After identifying problems, operators can access their tools category to explore some of the available devices enhanced and developed by the project. They can research and incorporate the most suitable solution for their particular problem.

The project was based on co-creation and collaboration and the fact that the operators willingly came to join the project, after an upfront and clear initial brief, led to a fruitful and enjoyable experience.

Starting with FIThydro project, it is hoped that the rapid acceleration of renewable technologies will not only be beneficial for humans, but every effort will also be invested to prevent technologies from disrupting aquatic species and ecosystems.

In my opinion, the eco-friendly project had been tried to be meaningful for European countries and others in the world.

I have heard that hydropower needs a lot of money, expecially when it has to be more fish friendly. What it means is that everything they make more efforts are helpful to create better solutions and decisions in other different fields.

We don't have much time to change global warming decreased so that it has to put more work even though they seem like pressing the results fast, not correct. Nevertheless, I would like to say that no one knows the ways how to make it more correct if they never try. I believe the expression try fast, fail fast. It will give us the result anyways. It would be studied to be sure for the meaningful result as soon as possible. I fully trust that we have been passing a lot more than we expected.

FIThydro project proved how to start a study for fish friendly. It inspired the people who can work with in the other countries. It is always hard to begin for the first when there is no answer yet. I would like to support the studies how it works as I can learn more about hydropower and hydroelectric power plants. It would bring more small waves to people like me one day.
