Tides of change in New York

New York may soon benefit from an injection of tidal power into its grid as tidal energy startup Verdant Power installs a half-scale generator in the East River tidal strait. It means for the city's energy mix and it could serve as a test case for other coastal cities.

Tidal energy works by converting the movement of the tides, in areas with a significant tidal range, into electricity. This type of energy production is still in its infancy.

However, Verdant Power, marine renewable energy start-up based in New York, made headway, installing three tidal power turbine generators in the city's East River tidal strait as part of the company's 5th generation tial turbing system. They have already secured $6m in funding for the project supported by the US Department of Energy and the New Yor State Energy Research and Development Authority. Also, they have an independent performance assessment from the European Maring Energy Centre(EMEC) tidal testing facility to deploy the technology outside of the US.

Verdant's Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) project.

This project expected to have a significant impact on the Big Apple's renewables goals. The RITE project demonstration featured three Gen5 turbines, which were transported from the company's New Jersey marine engineering support service facility to a service area for marine vessel installation. This demonstration is a big step along the path to global commercialisation and profitable commercial operations. The pre-commercial demonstration aims to optimise the economics of installation and maintenance over the system's 20-year life and prove its efficient performance.

Following the demonstration of the RITE generator, Verdant's project is currently under review for technological certification by EMEC for deployment outside of the US. EMEC will be assessing the power, receiving an internationally reconised Energy and verifying compliance with formulated international standards, Taylor who is Verdant's co-founder said.

Verdant's contribution to the energy mix.

Tidal stream generation has good potential to support current and future climate change actions. Tidal energy business is worthwhile to pursue. Despite its success, Verdant's grand plans for deployment will likely face the challenges already familiar to the tidal power generation industry worldwide. Some of the possible challenges are that it takes 10-12 years on average to bring a working prototype to commercialisation and such projects often find it difficult to compete against more affordable wind and soloar technologies. Even if the tidal energy turns into reality sonner rather than later, Verdant's projected costs are still far higher than levelised costs of wind and solar.

Futer development.

Deployment of the full-scale machines at the West Anglesey Tidal Demonstration Zone in Wales is dependent on attracting further revenue support. Verdant's progress so far goes to demonstrate that there are indeed high hopes for the commercial deployment of more tidal technologies, especially in areas that lack other renewable options.

In addition, ventures such as this are praised for being in line with New York’s climate goals to obtain 70% of the state’s power from renewable sources by 2030 and 100% from clean sources by 2040, as pledged by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2019.

In my opinion, Tidal energy is worth to develop for climate change. Solar and other energy have been working hard for the Earth better, however, it needs more power from anywhere for the future. Not only is Tidal energy too expensive to provide election in the early future, but it is also one of the keys that the last chance will be done in the very soon present.

We all made the happen which the Earth is going to be worse as the weather, air polution etc. Some people still don't think we have been losing better lives in this planet. I believe that we can have a optimistic thought of going to the universe. It doesn't say that we can break all of the chances we left right now.

I would like to say that we have to try faster and fail faster, so that we can obtain the best solution ASAP. I don't study Environmental Engineering as my major, I'm definately interested in the environment and its business. I wonder how we can't still handle the environmental problem with the amazing science development. It is urgent to do the best hard working ever than we have done before. This is the reason why I decided to have a job in one of the environmental industries. I truly believe that human can everything if we really do.

Vocabulary

Tidal energy : a renewable energy powered by the nature rise and fall of ocean tides and currents. Some of these technologies include turbines and paddles.

headway : n. to make progress or get closer to achieving something.

strait : n. a narrow area of sea that connects two larger areas of sea.

tailor : n. someone whose job is repair, make, and adjust(make changes to) clothes, expecially someone who makes jackets, trousers, coats, etc. for men.

caveat : n. a warning to consider something before taking any more action, or a statement that limits a more general statement.

nameplate : n. a piece of mental or plastinc fastened onto something to show who owns it, who has made it, or who lives or works there.

grid stability : a number of things "Availability all the time"

Ex) The reliability and consistency in power or electricity production. Solar power has poor grid stability because of unreliable sunlight hours and the potential for cloud.

looming ahead : 2 verbs if a worrying or threatening situation or event is looming, it seems likely to happen soon.

Ex) The threat of renewed civil war looms ahead.

indeed : really or certainly, often used to emphasize something. used to express that something is correct. used to add some extra information that develops or supports something you have just said.

pledge : a serious or formal promise, especially one to give money or to be a friend, or something that you give as a sign that you will keep a promise.

integrate onto : used to show movement into or on a particular place
